Our Roots

My youngest daughter has asked me to write about our elders. Unfortunately my paternal grandparents were non-Ahmadis. All my relatives from my father side are non-Ahmadis. They are of no importance to us. We did not inter- marry and so they were completely cut off from us.

My grandparents from mother side were Ahmadis. I have written about them in one of my episodes. I would like to trace their progeny in this episode for the benefit of our younger generation.

My maternal grandfather Hazrat Maulvi Muhammad Ilyas Khan Sahib, had twelve children. (Six boys and six girls.)

1. Abdul Hai Khan B.A. BT. He was the eldest son. After the completion of his education at Islamia College, Lahore, he joined the Education Department of NWFP. Soon he was elevated to the position of a Head Master. He was married to Zakia Begum (Our Mami) who is still alive and is in good health. Alhamdolillah. While he was posted at Sawabi, District Mardan I had the good fortune of living with him for about six months. He was a deeply religious man and an enthusiastic Ahmadi. He would lead the Maghreb and Isha prayers at home in congregation.

Once our grandfather was seriously ill and his chances of recovery were very slim. He asked his children to come near his bed. He asked them whether they would all be steadfast in Ahmadiyyat after his demise. Abdul Hai Khan replied on behalf of all those who were standing around his bed that they would always be loyal to their Faith and would be ever ready to sacrifice every thing for the protection of Ahmadiyyat. Hazrat Maulvi Sahib then raised a finger towards the sky and said, “My Lord I am leaving them in Ahmadiyyat. After my death you will be their guardian. Please make them steadfast on Ahmadiyyat and protect them fromSatan the accursed.” Hazrat Maulvi Sahib recovered from that illness.

Abdul Hai Khan died in young age and was buried in our village Mohib Banda.

I remember the day (5.10.1940) when his corpse was brought to our village for burial. I was playing in the vicinity of our Hujra when I saw an ambulance coming. We gathered round the ambulance as in those days it was very seldom that a motor vehicle would come to the villages. The door opened and I saw my grandfather alighting from the ambulance. I rushed towards him and greeted him with AssalamoAlaikum. He was very sad and in a choking voice he said,” I have brought your Mamoo with me.” He then asked me to arrange a charpai( Stretcher) so that his body could be carried home. I requested my non-Ahmadi uncles and cousins who promptly came to help. The body was taken to our house where, apart from my mother, my grandmother, Zakia Mami, Saliha Khala, Khadija Khala and Jamila Khala were waiting. In a few minutes the whole village converged at our house and Hujra to offer their condolences.
As there were no Ahmadis in the village all the funeral arrangements were made by my non-Ahmadi uncles and cousins. Kulsoom Khala arrived when the funeral procession was on its way to the grave yard. She was shown his face near the grave yard. Hajira Khala arrived after the burial. She was very upset and emotionally charged as she did not have a glimpse of her dear brother’s face before burial.

He left behind two children namely Rasheeda Begum and Abdul Aziz Khan of Peshawar.

He visited our village often to meet my mother and I remember him sitting with her at a fireside in our main bedroom. He was a handsome person and was a good sportsman.
