Narrow Escape

In 1986 I was stationed in Rabwah as Vakilud Diwan in Tehriki Jadid Offices. I was well settled there and had constructed a comfortable four bedroom house in a prestigious locality of Rabwah for myself and my children. In the end of March of that Year, on the insistence of a few friends I decided to write Memoirs of my long companionship with Hazrat Chaudhri Muhammad Zafrullah Khan Sahib. I had developed close relationship with him since 1959 when I arrived in England as the Deputy Imam of the London Mosque.
It was my great fortune to play host to this great scion of Ahmadiyyat and a world leader from 1972 to 1979 when he retired from the International Court of Justice and settled in a top flat at the UK Mission House. I was then the Imam of the London Mosque and Missionary In charge of UK Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission. He occupied the top flat of the Mission House while I had the middle flat as my residence. My wife and children looked after him as he had no family members living with him in London.
In the end of 1979 I was recalled to the International Headquarters of the Ahmadiyya Movement at Rabwah.

On the demise of Hazrat Chaudhri Sahib the official magazine of Khuddamul Ahmadiyya called, “Khalid” produced a special commemorative number of the magazine about Sir Zafrullah Khan. On the insistence of a few friends I wrote a detailed article for this magazine about my relationship with Sir Zafrullah Khan and about his great spiritual qualities that I had witnessed. This article was very well received and liked by the readers of the Magazine and I received many letters of appreciation from all over the world including a letter of appreciation from M.M. Ahmad Sahib from Washington and many other dignitaries of the Jamaat.

In 1985 I decided to have a reprint of this article in a book form. As the Jamaat Printing Press was very busy I approached a Printing Press at Faisalabad. This belonged to a Non Ahmadi owner and the entire management was Non Ahmadis. They agreed to print the book and deliver the bulk to me in April 1985, so that it could be sold at the Majlis Mushawirat to be held at Rabwah.

They delivered a hundred copies to me a day before the Mushawirat. These were sold like hot cakes and I received a large number of orders from several Jamaats in Pakistan.

During the Mushawirat the President of the International Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya requested me to visit my Province, the NWFP, and address the Majalis there. He provided me a car and sent instructions to Quaideen all over NWFP to make arrangements for my visit. At the conclusion of Majlis Mushawirat I embarked on this journey and arrived at Peshawar, the capital city of NWFP. I was received by the Quaid of Peshawer who told me that he had arranged a meeting of the Khuddam over the weekend.
The next day I was astonished to read in a local newspaper that an F.I.R has been registered against me by a Maulvi in Faisalabad called Maulvi Faqir Muhammad and warrants of my arrest have been issued. I immediately called Saddar Sahib of Khuddamul Ahmadiyya, Rabwah and sought his instructions. He told me that the maulvi had accused me of the breach of Ordinance 298 C, on the grounds that I had presented Sir Zafrullah Khan as a lover of the Holy Prophet, in the book. According to the maulvi, a Non Muslim could not be a lover of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him. Moreover, according to him the whole book gave the impression that Sir Zafrulla Khan was a true Muslim. According to the maulvi the Ahmadis were Non Muslims and outside the pale of Islam.

The remaining copies of the book were confiscated and the owner and four workers of the press were taken into custody and were sent to Jail. My arrest warrants were also issued.

Saddar Sahib instructed me to return to Rabwah late at night as the police was looking for me and inform him of my arrival. I arrived at 2.30AM and called Saddar Sahib. He told me that he along with two or three other officials of the Jamaat would be coming to my house in a few minutes. I welcomed them at my house and we had a long discussion as to what steps should to be taken to avoid arrest. Before dawn it was decided that I should move out of Rabwah and try to contact Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV in London.
I left Rabwah at Fajr time and arrived at Lahore from where I tried to get in touch with Huzoor. Huzoor was in Islamabd, England, on that day, I could not contact him. I then called my son Munir Ahmad Rafiq who was studying in London and asked him to apprise Huzoor of the situation and seek his advice. Munir immediately requested an audience with Huzoor which was granted. He briefed Huzoor about the incident. Huzoor told him that he would instruct the Nazir Aala at Rabwah to provide him the full details of the Case. He would then decide whether I should stay in Pakistan and be arrested or leave Pakistan, if it was possible.

I was anxiously awaiting some news from London and was greatly worried as in case of an arrest I would not be able to keep my Diabetes in control. April becomes very hot in Pakistan and the Pakistani Jails were worst administered and life in a Pakistani Jail was like hell. How would I keep my insulin in a fridge as there were no such facilities in Jails? How would I have a controlled diabetic diet in the jail? How long would I be in a Jail? Who would look after my wife who would be all alone in Rabwah if I was arrested as my two daughters were married in America and the third one was studying in England. Two of my sons, Munir and Mahmood were both studying in London? If I was convicted the minimum sentence was three years imprisonment. Would my scattered family be able to sustain life without me? These were the thoughts in my mind when I returned to Rabwah, again late at night. There was nothing else that I could do except to pray and anxiously wait for any instructions from Huzoor. The next day I moved to a friend’s house for fear of arrest.

In the evening Nazir Aala Sahib called me and told me that Huzoor had instructed him to send me to England immediately. That was a great relief. I was given a car and was asked to leave for Rawalpindi where arrangements for my seat reservation had been made. In the darkness of the evening I left Rabwah and arrived at Rawalpindi around 2.30 in the morning. I was told that my seat was booked on British Airways morning flight to London. Without any sleep or rest I prepared myself for the journey. The flight took off at 10’o clock in the morning and I had a sigh of relief. I arrived in London the same day in the afternoon. Alhamdolillah. I am told that the next day after I left Rabwah there was a Police raid on my house for my arrest.

After a few days in London, I was appointed Additional Vakilut Tasnif by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih and thus my Rabwah chapter was closed for good.
